Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That
As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
